August and Everything After, Counting Crows

Visual Identity + Photography | Fall 2022

Utilizing photography as the primary medium, the vinyl re-design applies a knowledge of typography to communicate the album's necessary information such as title and the track list and aesthetic systems to create a well-developed composition.

“August and Everything After” explores ideas of lost love through music. The album highlights the themes of change, redemption, and forgiveness in the tracks, which served as inspiration for the packaging and typographic design.

Initial Direction & Photography

At first, the idea of capturing a nature scene to portray the seasons changing from fall to summer in August was what I had envisioned. I wanted to have an overall golden theme to tie in the record I was using. Afterwards, I realized the message of the album was not fully represented in the previous direction. So, I got models to help better demonstrate the emotions from the album I wanted to convey.

Planned and executed a photoshoot with models, staying true to the directional themes. Selected and edited images to fit into a square format. Focused on portraying themes of lost love, change, and forgiveness through the shoot and in the editing stage.

Typographic Exploration

Refined image choice and editing and began exploring typefaces that would mimic the horizontal lines created by slow shutter speed in the front cover image. Decided on a modern, bold typeface. Investigated how different color applications affected readability and hierarchy, as well as placement on the compositions.
